Soul-Warming Chai Latte

A steeping cup of spicy chai tea

When the weather starts to cool off each year, there are certain spices and tastes that we innately crave.  The warm smell of cinnamon and apples baking in a homemade pie crust, that rich pumpkin pie at the Thanksgiving dinner table, and for me, the distinctive smell of spices found in an irresistibly soul-warming chai latte.  A little trivia for you—the word for tea in most places around the globe is actually chai; it need not only refer to this Indian spiced milk tea that we have come to love.  The Indian version with milk consists of a strong black tea spiced with ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and pepper.  Chai lattes tend to pop up on drink menus this time of year but as I’ve recently discovered, they are quite easy to make in the comfort of your own home as well. All you need is a chai tea bag, warm milk, and a pinch of sweetener and grated nutmeg.  One sip of a chai latte and you’ll not only be grinning from ear to ear, but you’ll be thanking your lucky stars that fall has finally arrived!

My Indian friend makes the best “tea” which sounds just like yours. You have so much knowledge in multiple areas!

Yum Mrs. Jan! I bet your friend’s version is better than any bagged version out there! It is truly an interesting mix of spices in ‘chai tea’–so fragrant and very unique. :>

Yes it “does something to you” when you drink it–the spices are just the right mix.

You are so right! I think the best chai latte I have had recently is at a restaurant in Atlanta called Carroll Street Café in the Cabbagetown area. It is a favorite spot for me and my good friend Laurie. We are addicted to a pre-lunch chai latte…a perfect drink for chatting and catching up!
