Benvenuto in Italia!

Sorrento 3

More specifically, welcome to Sorrento!  Scott and I made it to Sorrento safely on Saturday after a couple of planes, a bus from Naples, and a train from Sorrento into Piano de Sorrento.  Piano de Sorrento is the specific location of my bed & breakfast, Hotel Soleluna.  Overall a comfortable and easy trip, but this darned jet lag has me wide awake at 2am and sleepy, well not too far after our morning cappuccinos to tell you the truth.  We have already gotten a lot of exploring under our belts and spent the day yesterday walking into Sorrento, around a 3 mile walk.  Scooters and Smart Cars zipping around everywhere, it is interesting how fast everyone drives, but also how considerate they are of pedestrians.  (It’s a good thing they are, seeing that there aren’t very many sidewalks wider than about 12 inches!)

Sorrento is located on the Amalfi Coast and lies on a terrace that slopes down to the sea from about 160 feet up.  Known in the 18th century as ‘Sorrento the Kind’ because of its mild climate and gorgeous views, Sorrento is ‘resort town’, it is not hard to see why.  This is a place where Italians come to vacation—especially during the busy season of June-August.

One of the most unique features of this delightful city are all of the citrus trees.  They are everywhere! From lemons to oranges, it seems like everyone who is anyone has a grove in their backyard.  We wandered through a public garden yesterday that was filled with lemons! It’s no wonder that this is where Limoncello, the famous lemon liqueur is made.  (You better believe that one of my first stops was to one of the many markets to buy a bottle of Limoncello!) We actually spotted a basket of lemons for sale in the main square that were actually the size of a cantaloupe—no exaggeration.

So as I settle in to my room at the Hotel Soleluna in Piano de Sorrento, and start my cooking class and language class, I want to share some of our photos with you so far.  From our first meal in Italy, to the views surrounding this majestic area.  A presto!
