Elizabeth’s Hot Spice Drink

WP_20150903_15_32_43_Pro

For as long as I can remember, my Mom Elizabeth has been making this spiced apple cider that is sweet, fragrant and not to mention comforting.  Traditionally made in a percolator, this Hot Spiced Drink is a staple in our household and was made for luncheons, Holiday get together and dinner parties quite often.  A sweet mixture of cran-apple juice and pineapple juice along with whole cloves, whole allspice and cinnamon sticks with brown sugar to taste.  Filled with the flavors of Fall and apple-picking season, this lovely warm drink is now a cooler temperature staple in my kitchen as well.

  • Prep time:

  • Total time:
  • Yield: 25 mugs
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Recipe type: Beverage

Ingredients:

  • (2) 64- oz. containers of Cran Apple Juice
  • 1 large can Pineapple juice
  • 4-6 whole cloves
  • 4-6 whole allspice
  • 4-5 cinnamon sticks
  • ½ box dark brown sugar (more of less to taste)

Directions:

  1. Combine juices in coffee urn percolator; put in top basket the cloves, allspice, cinnamon sticks and sugar. Allow to perk for 30 minutes before serving. Refrigerates well; but must shake before serving.
  2. (I actually make mine in a large stock pot on the stove instead; simply place all ingredients in stock pot, bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1-2 hours before serving warm*)

This is a wonderful recipe that I have also enjoyed using-bought a large percolator once just for making it.

Hi Mrs. Jan! It is a nice recipe, isn’t it? I recently made it not in a percolator but in a big stock pot on the stove instead. Just added all of the ingredients right into the pot, brought it to a boil, then reduced the heat and let cook for about an hour-and-a-half. Turned out very tasty! Hope y’all are doing well. :>

I’ll have to try that since I rarely have a large group anymore and the smaller percolator is for our coffee.
Did ya’ll do the Road to Hanna or maybe you had too many agendas?

Yes, give it a try and let me know what you think.

I don’t remember reading about the Road to Hanna…was it on Oahu? We explored most of the beautiful island of Oahu for this vacation, Scott’s sister and brother in law have a home there. As well as his niece and her husband living there, too. Really loved our hikes, exploring Honolulu, and of course…the food! Where did you go, which islands?

Maui and Oahu- a week each. Road to Hanna in Maui.
How nice for you to have relatives there.
Would love to go to the other islands but need to see other places also. I know L & E are having fun.

Very nice– I hear Maui is a beauty as well. Did you get a chance to visit either the Honolulu Museum of Art, or Shangri La, the Doris Duke home? Both spectacular cultural sights. 😊
Yes, got a text that they made it to Quebec City today. Canada is another place Scott and I hope to explore very soon! So much to see everywhere!

No but ate shrimp from a truck, enjoyed the Dole Plantation and Pearl Harbor and visited the Turtle Bay Resort. We stayed at one of the places across from the large market in the tourist area right on the water. Right next door was an old exclusive hotel with rockers across the front. We would go sit in them and people watch and saw wedding parties and such. Fun!
