Ever since I arrived in Italy, I have been hearing that Positano, a neighboring town on the Amalfi Coast, was the place to see.  After seeing Sorrento and the Isle of Capri, I found it hard to believe that any town could be more majestic and breathtaking than either of those.  I stand corrected.  Don’t get me wrong, both Sorrento and Capri are extremely charming and have unique characteristics all their own, but Positano is, in fact, a living postcard.

Positano is a vertical town situated above turquoise blue waters filled with residents’ boats, and graced with light gray beaches covered with orange beach chairs and umbrellas.  Pastel-colored homes, restaurants, and hotels stud the lush cliffs—all only accessible by either the one continuous road winding its way up, or by stairs.  After a short hour-long bus ride from Sorrento, my new friend Deanna and I arrived Sunday morning to an overcast, almost chilly Positano.  Only small drizzle came off the daunting clouds above us, which was perfectly fine as we spent most of the morning in and out of local shops, cathedrals, and art galleries.  The weather quickly changed into a warm, sunny afternoon with the gust of the wind and a few short hours.

The fashions in Positano suit the classy demeanor of the town’s residents.  Hand-embroidered linen tops, dresses, and pants in a multitude of colors hang in shop windows like personal invitations into this charming world.  Shoe shops where you can affordably have sandals made especially for you are also a highlight of commerce here.   With beachside restaurants, wine shops, and pastry shops galore, it’s not hard to choose a place to sit, enjoy a nice meal, and people watch.  Everyone is happy here—it shows on their faces and is evident in their laughter; Positano is a perfect place to relax and just be.  Just when you think life in general couldn’t get any better, you visit Positano and ‘Snap!’; you just became part of a living postcard.
