Pear & Berry Crisp

The best way to preserve fresh, seasonal produce at its peak is to freeze it.  That way, even if a particular fruit or vegetable isn’t in season when you crave it, it is available to you in all its original glory.  Obviously berries are not in season this time of year, but I was craving sweet berry crisp, so I defrosted a bag of mixed berries that I had in my freezer.  I researched fruit crisp recipes involving berries and came across a lovely recipe from the kitchen of Martha Stewart Living from their ‘Everyday FOOD Light’  cookbook.  A nice combination of defrosted berries and juicy pears combined with a touch of sugar, flour and a squeeze of lemon juice, all topped off with a nice oatmeal topping and baked until bubbly and fragrant.  You can’t serve a fruit crisp without creamy frozen yogurt or ice cream, right?  Bingo.  Guess what I also had in my freezer, a pint of vanilla frozen yogurt. I think this dish was meant to be.
